Twitch Monitors Controversial Gambling Streams

Amidst the controversy surrounding the gambling streams on twitch, Twitch has now revealed that they’re closely monitoring gambling content on the platform and that they will take action in all verified incidents of illegal gambling. Big name streamers on the platform including xQc, Trainwrecks and Adin Ross have sponsored gambling streams on twitch.

And the most concerning recently was that twitch streamer Trainwrecks opens up about losing a whopping $2 million while gambling off stream. In the past few weeks, the trend has come under increasing scrutiny, both for its legality and morality.

Now, according to a new report, Twitch is keeping a close eye on the trend. In response to the WIRED article, Twitch stated; “We strictly prohibit illegal content and activity on the service, and take action in all verified incidents of illegal gambling that are reported to us. Our Community Guidelines make clear that ‘[Streamers] must respect all applicable local, national, and international laws while using our services.”

Twitch further indicated that the intention of their community guidelines is to create a safe, positive experience for users on the streaming platform. Although it does not appear that Twitch will outright ban gambling streams right now, they did indicate that they would be closely monitoring gambling content on the site.

Also, Twitch’s terms of service do make specific mention of gambling streams, while rival platforms YouTube and Facebook Gaming prohibit streams showing gambling sites that have not been reviewed. Interestingly, the dedicated category for gambling streams which is Slots was the 14th most-watched category on Twitch for the month of June with names like Trainwrecks, xQc, Xposed and Yassou making up the top 10 streamers for hours watched. It’s also of note that Slots is one of the only popular categories on Twitch not to feature a custom-made image for display.
