The Explanation Of The Term Ban Controversy

Amazon owned streaming platform twitch recently updated its harassment policies to discourage the use of ‘sexually focused’ insults. It seems like Twitch is missing the mark and is leaving both streamers and community members feeling more frustrated than ever.

Many members of the Twitch community feel it is unfair and non-inclusive that members of minority groups, like PoC streamers or LGBTQ+ streamers, have to use mods and filters to prevent the use of slurs in their channel, which are undeniably more loaded than the terms “simp,” “incel,” or “virgin.” Also, banning those words seemingly ignores the issues female streamers have to deal with. Twitch is taking harassment more seriously and aiming to stop the use of words that can be offensive, but starting with these words specifically has left a foul taste in the mouths of many.

It is fantastic that Twitch is trying to fight harassment throughout its platform. Hopefully, the company will direct its attention to being more inclusive and will stop harassment from all angles, not just specifically around these three words.
