Spongebob Text-to-speech Mod

Spongebob Text-to-speech Mod

There is always a considerable risk of mischief when text-to-speech (TTS) for donations is activated when a Twitch stream is in progress.

While it often increases donations for streams, it may also result in weird situations, as Super Mario gamer Squeex learned the hard way yesterday. Squeex had TTS enabled for bit donations during yesterday’s stream, and viewers began to donate bits with voice modulations that changed the TTS voice to that of everyone’s favorite Porifera: Spongebob Squarepants.

By starting a TTS message with “spongebob:,” users were sending audio to the stream that was up to interpretation, but it was done through Spongebob’s distinctive voice. The exact message, which was repeatedly donated was: “spongebob: O? O? auhh O? O? auhh O? O? auhh O? O? auhh O? O? auhh O? O? auhh O? O? auhh O? O? auhh spongebob: auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh auhh spongebob: O? O? O? O? O? O? O? O? O_?”

The auhhs and Os sounded like Spongebob was being thrashed or doing a sexually provocative deed when they were converted from text to audio. It’s possible that the viewers who donated wanted it to sound like the latter based on the comments of several conversation participants. The messages weren’t clear to Squeex as to how to reply. After initially attempting to ignore them, he couldn’t help but laugh as the TTS Spongebob loudly yelled in a fashion that you’d anticipate from a fan during a crucial moment at a sporting event near the finish of the audio clips.
