Soulja Boy’s Song is Inspired by Squid Game

Popular Rapper and a Twitch streamer, Soulja Boy, has recently joined the Squid Game hype train by rapping over the Netflix show’s opening score.

Squid Game, the most recent Netflix viral show, is based on childhood games that are used as challenges to give impoverished contestants a chance to win millions of dollars. With a lethal game of red light/green light, the pilot episode sets the tone for the rest of the series. With MrBeast wanting to reproduce the games for a video and TikTok introducing an inspired loadout challenge on Warzone, the show has inspired a lot of influencers and video games.

The melodic, string-filled music by Korean composer Jung Jae-il may lack bass and percussion, but that doesn’t stop the ‘Crank dat’ rapper from utilizing the song’s hard-hitting pulse.

Soulja Boy instantly made his Squid Game influences clear, not only with the single’s title but also with the first lyric of the song, which refers to the series’ first game: “Red light, green light / You know that I came with my team, right?” His ability to fit the mood of the show’s severe tasks is demonstrated with lines like “Get to poppin’ s**t like a squid game” and “red light, green light/something doesn’t seem right.”

On social media, reactions are divided, with some fans praising Soulja Boy’s release while others dismissing it as “crap” and “offbeat.”

Whether you like it or not, Soulja Boy is the first mainstream rapper to join the viral show. We’ll have to wait and see whether anyone else takes his place.
