CD Projekt Hacked

The developer of troubled sci-fi video game Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red has been hit with a ransomware attack. CD Projekt went on twitter and posted an announcement of the “Important Update”.

They shared a screenshot of the notepad document which has some interesting text. According to CD Projekt’s announcement of the hack, it seems that the hacker was hoping to hold the data ransom in the hopes of getting them to pay out. The hackers gave the company 48 hours to contact them based on the notepad document that CD Projekt shared. It also wrote; “If we will not come to an agreement, then your source codes will be sold or leaked online and your documents will be sent to our contacts in gaming journalism.”

The attackers apparently stole source code for not only Cyberpunk 2077 but other CD Projekt Red games like Witcher 3, an unreleased version of Witcher 3, and Gwent, the digital Witcher card game. However, CD Projekt says that it has secured its IT infrastructure, and has begun restoring its data from intact backups. It says it has informed the “relevant authorities” as well as IT forensic specialists.
