Staysafe is Banned

Staysafe is a Twitch streamer and a popular world of warcraft streamer. He was banned from Twitch because of streaming the 2020 U.S. Presidential election. His ban will last up to 48 hours. He was said to be casually streaming but then the election became the topic in his chat and so he turned to Fox News for the live election coverage. While his Reddit community notes that he also streamed footage from rival network CNN, it seems that the ban resulted specifically as a result of showing Fox copyrighted content.

When you visit the Twitch channel of Staysafetv, it simply shows a message that it is presently unavailable. Staysafe has posted on his official Twitter account, sharing with his viewers exactly what happened. He confirmed that the live broadcast of the election got him banned from the platform. He also indicated in his Twitter post that he also got a DMCA strike a few months ago because of the song In Da Club by 50 Cent. Because of this, he thinks that if he gets another ban, it will be a permanent ban on the platform forever.

He tweeted out; “48 hour ban for watching election coverage on Twitch. More concerningly, I got another DMCA a few months ago for playing ‘In Da Club’ by 50 Cent in a clip that was 2 years old – so I believe if I get another one it will be a perma-ban? Very nice @Twitch”.

Bans for showing copyrighted media such as music, television, and movies have become increasingly common in recent months. It’s likely that Twitch is coming under greater pressure from corporate content owners to adhere to the DMCA.
