Pokimane Issues an Apology After Backlash

Popular Twitch variety streamer Pokimane apologizes on Twitter for ‘overusing’ African American language in her latest stream title and VOD title.

Twitch streamer Pokimane titled one of her recent streams ‘on god frfr? it’s bussin bussin in here’ and according to many fans, this was a highly incorrect use of African American Vernacular English or AAVE or ‘black slang language,’ which Poki should have avoided if she doesn’t understand the meaning of the phrase.

African-American Vernacular English, also referred to as Black English, Black English Vernacular, or occasionally Ebonics, is the variety of English natively spoken, particularly in urban communities, by most working- and middle-class African Americans and some Black peoples. As a result of Pokimane’s latest slip-up, the internet wants Pokimane canceled for her ‘insensitive’ use of AAVE, especially after she has a history of using such slang in her streams previously, something she had to apologize for.

Now, on Pokimane’s August 20th twitter post, she issued an apology as she wrote; “sorry for late night tweet but wanted to apologize if i overused aave in my twitch title today, was not aware that some of those terms were aave & didn’t mean it in a mocking way whatsoever.”

The community largely believes that Pokimane was wrong to use AAVE and certainly needs to apologize for the same. However, there are still some who side with the popular Twitch streamer and feel that she doesn’t deserve to be canceled for what she did.
